What you should know about buying an emergency standby generator.
Blackouts are becoming more frequent in California. Major storms, infrastructure failings, and devastating wildfires have reminded us all of the vulnerabilities of the electrical power supply from the utility companies.
An emergency standby generator can energize a home or business uninterrupted for days after a blackout. But these sophisticated machines and electrical power systems are a substantial investment.
Here are eight things you should know about buying an emergency standby generator.
Emergency standby generators offer a reliable power solution to extended power outages. Unlike a small portable generator, the system includes both an Emergency Standby Generator that is permanently installed on a concrete pad on the property and an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) integrated with the building’s electrical panel. An internal combustion engine fueled by natural gas, liquid propane, or diesel drives the generator that produces VAC power.
Common generators sizes for residential applications range from 8 Kilowatts to 150 Kilowatts depending on customer needs.
Commercial and industrial applications range from 8 Kilowatts to over 2 Megawatts. Most generators are housed in a weatherproof sound-attenuated enclosure. The generator will continue to provide uninterrupted power as long as the fuel remains supplied.

An automatic standby generator power system includes both an automatic standby generator and automatic transfer switch that are permanently installed and simultaneously work together. It works in the following sequence:
An automatic standby generator system monitors incoming voltage from the utility power line supplying a home or building with electricity via automatic transfer switch that is integrated into the structures electrical system. When the utility power is interrupted, a signal from the automatic transfer switch tells the generator to automatically start running.
When the automatic transfer switch senses that the generator is running and producing power it automatically disconnects the utility power line and reconnects to the generator power line, providing emergency power to your a home or building within seconds of a sudden power outage. The generator is driven by an internal combustion engine, which will continuously run as long as its fuel source is supplied.
When the system senses that utility power has been restored, the automatic transfer switch reconnects your home or building back to utility power. Upon sensing the return to the utility power source, the generator automatically shuts down and returns to standby mode. The automatic transfer switch also acts as a safety mechanism to prevent back feeding electricity to the grid, which potentially could start a fire. This seamless operation makes standby generators safe and ideal for homeowners to secure power and businesses to stay in operation during unknown outages.
Local codes and requirements vary for city and counties. Depending on application, proper installation requires meeting noise, fuel storage, building and electrical codes, and emission ordinances. Additionally, most building codes require generators to be at least 5 feet from openings, and away from flammable materials and property lines. Many inspectors will require a contractor to provide engineering plans to apply for permitting.
We strongly recommend hiring a professional to assess not only your electrical load needs but also the logistics of installing a generator in your specific home or business. Installations needs and costs can greatly vary from project to project.
Installing a standby generator is no DIY project. Working with electrical systems, plumbing, equipment placement and fuel sources can be extremely dangerous and require special skills, knowledge and tools to properly perform the work required.
Properly sizing a generator, installing an Automatic Transfer Switch, upgrading an existing electrical system, and selecting a fuel type should be done by a qualified professional. Improper installations can lead to building code violations, system malfunctioning, fire and explosion hazards, costly fines, and voided manufacturer warranties.
There are several factors related to the selection of a standby generator that have a direct impact on the costs.
The physical size of a generator can vary greatly. Smaller size generators are similar to the size of a residential outdoor pad-mounted AC unit. Larger generators can get up to the size of a tractor trailer truck.
Building power usage and loads need to be surveyed to ensure the generator is producing the correct wattage to meet all electrical power requirements. The larger the generator's capacity, the more circuits it can power at once.
Automatic Transfer Switches to be installed must be sized accordingly and meet electrical code. Natural gas, LP vapor, and diesel options must be properly identified per specific project needs and address emissions requirements.
Therefore, selecting the generator should involve a qualified installer with experience in power generator systems.
A load survey needs to be performed to calculate the combined load of the devices you intend to run simultaneously during an outage while also considering the starting wattages of motor-driven appliances such as refrigerators, AC units, medical, industrial equipment, etc.
In addition, site infrastructure needs to be evaluated for upgrades and modifications for incorporating the new system. Engineering and permitting also should be factored into installation costs. Such mentioned factors lead to higher initial costs associated with generator installations but are necessary for the system to be installed properly and trusted for reliability.
The cost of losing power to an application where it's a life safety, mission critical, or necessary to sustaining profit and operational protection far exceeds the costs of installation and maintenance requirements of a standby generator system.
Like a car, an emergency standby generator is powered by internal combustion engine that can run nonstop for days at a time, so they require a considerable amount of maintenance. Standby generator systems are not an “install and ignore” type of project. Generally, the bigger the unit, the more care and servicing required. Certified sales and service providers are required to maintain up-to-date certifications, software updates, and tooling to properly service this specialized equipment.
After continuous use or in periodic intervals a generator needs to be inspected and properly serviced by a certified technician.
Your generator will stay more reliable if you are frequently inspecting and performing planned maintenance services at the recommended intervals.
Buy local. Lots of deals can be found on the internet, but that might not be the best option for this type of purchase. The complexity of product sizing and selection, installation of the system, local codes, warranty initiation, and certified technical support required may be near impossible for most to acquire from an internet purchase.
If a non-certified installer makes a mistake or damages the equipment, costs will be exponential in correcting the problem. Emergency standby generators will need to be serviced and warranty issues addressed by certified sales and service providers. The entity where you buy the unit should offer full after sales, mobile service, and technical support to you locally.
